Built on the remnants of a flooded gravel pit from the 1930s, Thorpe Park officially opened its doors to the public on
May 24, 1979.
After changing ownership several times, the park is now part of the Merlin Entertainments family, the second-largest
theme park operator in the world.
Over the years, the park has attracted 2,000,000 visitors annually, making it the third most-visited theme park in the
UK, following Alton Towers and Legoland Windsor.
Where is Thorpe Park located?
Thorpe Park is located southeast of London, very close to Heathrow
International Airport.
What does it include?
Thorpe Park consists of the theme park itself and a hotel with themed rooms
called “Thorpe Park Cabins”.
When is it open?
Thorpe Park’s season runs from March to early November.
I recommend checking the official park website for updated opening hours and downloading the Thorpe Park app, which will
be extremely useful before and during your visit.
How much does Thorpe Park cost?
The price of a one-day admission ticket to Thorpe Park ranges between £30
and £50 per person.
What are the themed areas of Thorpe Park?
Thorpe Park is divided into seven themed
areas, although the transitions between themes are not always very noticeable:
- Port and Basecamp
- Amity
- The Jungle
- The Dock Yard
- Lost City
- Old Town
- Fearless Valley
- Swarm Island
Port and Basecamp
The Basecamp area includes security checkpoints, turnstiles, restrooms, and the
entrance bridge leading into the park.
This leads to The Dome, which serves as the park’s central hub, featuring:
- Vibes Bar & Kitchen
- A play area
- The Coffee Shack
- Restrooms and lockers
- The Island Gift Shop
- Guest services
The Dome was previously known as “Port Atlantis”, featuring an underwater Atlantis theme, most of which was removed
following Merlin’s acquisition of the park.
The Dome remains open beyond park hours to provide entertainment and dining options for guests staying at the Thorpe
Shark Cabins, including a buffet breakfast.
Amity
This land is themed after a 1950s American fishing village hit by a tsunami and was first
introduced with Tidal Wave in 2000.
The area expanded in 2006 with Stealth, themed around the Amity Speedway drag strip.
Stealth is an Intamin hydraulic launch coaster, standing 62.5 meters tall and accelerating from 0 to 129 km/h in just
1.9 seconds.
It was considered the fastest accelerating coaster in the world and remains:
- The third tallest coaster in the UK
- The second fastest coaster in the UK (recently surpassed by Hyperia)
The Jungle
The main attractions in this area include:
- Nemesis Inferno – a Bolliger & Mabillard inverted coaster set inside a volcano
- Rumba Rapids – a classic river rapids ride
The Dock Yard
This area is primarily the plaza of Ghost Train, a strange indoor attraction.
In the same land, you’ll also find:
- The Walking Dead: The Ride – a horror-themed indoor coaster
Lost City
The Lost City is themed around recently unearthed Atlantean ruins, featuring the Colossus
coaster as its main attraction.
Opened in 2002, it once held the world record for the most inversions on a roller coaster with 10 inversions. This
record was later broken by The Smiler at Alton Towers in 2013 with 14 inversions.
Old Town
The highlight attraction in this area is Saw – The Ride, a coaster featuring a 30-meter drop
and a beyond-vertical first drop of over 100°.
The ride is inspired by the Saw horror movie franchise and is set in an abandoned warehouse/sawmill.
Fearless Valley
The standout attraction in this area is Hyperia, the tallest and fastest roller coaster
in the UK.
Fearless Valley also includes:
- A Burger King
- Victorious Games
- The Hyporium souvenir shop
- Cloud Nine Treats
- Themed restrooms
Hyperia’s storyline is quite fascinating:
Hyperia, the “Golden Goddess”, is trapped on an island, unable to conquer her fear of water. Inspired by birds soaring
in the sky, she forges wings of unbreakable golden steel to fly and overcome her fears, hence the slogan: “Find Your
Fearlessness”.
Currently, it holds the title of the tallest and fastest coaster in the UK, reaching a maximum height of 72 meters and
speeds over 130 km/h.
