How does the skip line work at Walt Disney World?

Starting from July 24, 2024, Disney will introduce a new skip-the-line system at both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida.

After just three years of the Genie+ service, Disney is taking a step back, attempting to simplify a system that was never fully embraced by visitors—while also taking a step forward in expanding premium service offerings.

In this article, I’ll focus on the new system at Walt Disney World. The system at Disneyland California follows the same principles but applies to the two parks at the West Coast resort.

But if you don’t want to learn all the details and just want to enjoy your dream trip to the theme parks without any hassle—I have the perfect solution for you!

Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass both aim to minimize wait times, sharing some features while

How Does Lightning Lane Work at Walt Disney World?

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Purchase your park admission ticket (click here for help)
  • Download the My Disney Experience app
  • Create your account and link your tickets
  • Select a date and theme park
  • Choose either a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, Single Pass, or both
    • For Multi Pass, pre-book up to three experiences with assigned times
    • For Single Pass, select an available time slot
  • Follow the steps to complete the purchase and get your confirmation
  • From the confirmation screen, tap “Plan Another Day” or “View My Day” for your selections

You can modify your selections until you use your first Multi Pass reservation or until your Single Pass time.

  • At your scheduled time, go to the Lightning Lane entrance, scan your ticket or MagicBand on the Mickey-shaped tap point, and wait for the green light (what’s a MagicBand?)

How to Optimize Lightning Lane Multi Pass Usage at Walt Disney World

Once you’ve used your three pre-booked reservations, you can immediately book another—then another after that, and so on (subject to availability).
Tip: Schedule your third attraction no later than 1:00 PM to maximize your chances of snagging another slot later in the day or evening.

One Big Drawback!

At the time of this article’s publication, all of the above is only available if you’re physically located in the U.S. or Canada.
This means you cannot book Lightning Lane passes from outside North America—something Disney hopefully resolves soon, but it may be a while.
